Claire Porter

Claire Porter is a choreographer, writer, dancer with an extensive record of performances in Europe, Asia and in the USA. Porter is a Guggenheim Fellow and has received NEA Choreography Fellowships, NJ State Council on the Arts Choreography Fellowships, NewMusicUSA Awards, a Rockefeller Foundation Residency at Bellagio Center Italy and Mid-Atlantic Choreography Fellowships. She choreographs for her Claire Porter / PORTABLES, other dance companies, faculty members and University Dance Companies. Porter teaches Laban Movement Analysis, Choreography, and Creative Process for the MFA Dance program at Montclair State University and Creativity as Practice for Fairleigh Dickinson University. Porter has an MA Dance, BA Mathematics and is a Laban Movement Analyst. She cowrote The Laban Workbook for Actors, created Dynamics in a Bag, a series of cards to teach dynamic range, and Awake Breaks, 20 simple movement tasks to do when a break is needed.

 

Porter’s PORTABLES is a series of solos and small group works that are simple to produce and that adapt to a variety of spaces. Such spaces have included boats, backyards, parks, homes, art galleries, museums, staircases, science labs, conference rooms, as well as small and large theaters. Porter’s award winning Namely, Muscles, the poetic enactment of all the muscles of the body and then some, has been performed at kinesiology/body conferences, poetry festivals, medical schools, dance festivals, and theater festivals. Her Portables area changing series selected from repertory. Favorites include Piano, Interview, Happen Chance, Green Dress Circle, See You Around, Connecting Flights, At the Gate, Guided Tour, Fitness Digest, and HomeStretch and have toured to Europe, Korea, India, and the USA.
