Rainy Demerson is a second year Ph.D. student in Critical Dance Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Rainy holds an MFA in Dance from Hollins University, an MA in Dance Education from New York University, and a BA in World Arts and Cultures/Dance from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dedicated to gaining a first-hand understanding of culture in context, she studied dance in Indonesia, Cuba, Brazil, Senegal, Barbados, Belize, Germany and Senegal. A nationally certified Yoga Instructor and New York state-certified K-12 dance educator, Rainy developed curriculum and taught Dance and Yoga throughout New York City public schools for seven years. She enjoyed teaching several courses for Lindenwood University in Missouri, and as a tenure-track Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator at El Paso Community College in Texas. She has articles published in the Journal of Dance Education and the Journal of Emerging Dance Scholarship. In New York, Rainy danced with Rebollar Dance Theater and Mezclado Movement as well as founding her own company, Sacred Space Dance. She performed with Leverage Dance Theater in St. Louis, and has produced her choreography in New York, California and Senegal. Her work has been presented in festivals such as New Shoes at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, Dance in Revolting Times (DIRT) at Dance Mission in San Francisco, and DUMBO Dance Festival, CoolNY at Dixon Place, and Todo Mezclado Festival in New York City. When the mood strikes, she is also a freelance Samba dancer and enjoys confusing her friends in New York who can’t quite figure out which state she lives in, since she keeps popping up Brooklyn.
