Julius Brewster Cotton

Choreographer, Master Class Instructor

Born in Brooklyn, New York. Julius began dancing at the age of 11 years old at the Crown Heights Youth Collective in Brooklyn as a student of African ethnic dances.  He continued his studies in ballet, jazz, and modern dance at the Philippa Duke Schuyler middle school for the Gifted and Talented. There his dance teachers from Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Charles Moore Dance Center urged him to further his dance studies. Taking their advice Julius took the exam and auditioned for LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts, better known as the Fame School.  Julius, while at LaGuardia High School trained with teachers from Juilliard, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ballet Hispanico, Joffrey Ballet, Marth Graham Dance Company, Limon Dance Company, Paul Taylor Dance Company among others. It was there Julius began studying formally the techniques of Ballet, Graham and Horton. To further his studies in Horton, Julius was admitted to the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, where under the tutelage of Milton Myers was introduced further to Horton Technique. After studying with Milton Myers, Julius began deeper study of the Horton Technique where he was introduced to the methods of how to teach and study the technique. Julius graduated from Southern Methodist University, with undergraduate degrees in Literature, African American Studies, and Dance Performance. Julius has worked with Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Lula Elzy Dance Theatre, Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Company where he was a founding member, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Ballethnic, Tania Perez Salas Compania de Danza, Lalaget, El Taller Coreografico de la UNAM; and has been in various musicals including the original productions of Peter Pan and Wicked in Mexico City. Julius has been featured many times in TV and on stage with Mexican Pop Star Yuri, and was the choreographer for Broadway star, Bianca Marroquin for her Mexican tour. Julius retired from the stage as a performer to further his love of Horton Technique by teaching throughout Mexico and Latin America. As the only teacher of pure Horton technique in Mexico, Julius works tirelessly to ensure that the students capture the essence and truth of the technique. He has taught at the most important dance institutions in Mexico sharing his knowledge not only with the students but with their teachers as well. Besides his work as an instructor in the Horton technique, Julius also gives advanced level classes in Ballet. Julius holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Dance from Hollins University and is currently a full-time professor of dance at The University of the Americas Puebla in Puebla, Mexico.
